Staples Return Policy – All About Refunds and Exchanges

Staples is an Office Retail Company based in America that primarily deals in producing office supplies and related products. They operate in both online and offline mode with stores located in 14 European countries, including Austria, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

The company was founded in 1986 and opened its first store in Brighton, Massachusetts. It currently operates in different continents to fulfill office needs such as office supplies, furniture, etc.

What is Staples Return Policy?

Staples is dedicated to ensuring customer satisfaction and allows returns and exchange of its products using a receipt or a packing slip. Only the products in their original condition and packaging including all the accessories and manuals are accepted by the store. 

The Staples Return policy differ for products of different categories such as:

For customers buying online and offline

Office Supplies can be returned at any time from the date of purchase, however, they must be in their original, undamaged conditions and have all the accessories, manuals, and packaging intact. The returns can only be made via receipts or email that you received at the time of purchase. 

Technology-related items are to be returned within 14 days from the date of purchase, such as computers, digital cameras, laptops, printers, and tablets.

Furniture can also be returned within 14 days of purchasing and it must be disassembled and safe for shipping. If the purchased item was custom-made then you can not return it unless it was damaged when you receive it. 

Holiday Return Policy

Staples also provides an extended timeframe on products purchased during the holiday season. For products brought as gifts between 15th November and 24th December, the extended timeframe is until 25th January. This is only allowed for technology and furniture products and they must have receipt barcode intact and readable.

Software items that are currently sold by Staples are eligible for return within 30 days. The product must be unopened and boxed to be returnable. Opened boxes and downloadable software are not eligible for return or refund. If you wish to exchange it for similar software, then you can only replace it with the same title version. 

  • Digital Softwares are not eligible for return or refund.
  • Other office supplies such as Ink and Toner must be unopened and unexpired to be eligible for return. They can be refunded at any time only if they are not opened or expired.  
  • Applecare+ are can be returned within 30 days of purchasing. 
  • Prepaid Cards are non-refundable. 

In-Store Purchases

Returns with a receipt

For customers paying via cash, debit card, or check, the return will be processed with a receipt and refunded with cash.

  • If you paid via debit card and carrying it at the time of purchase, then you can be refunded on your card as well.
  • If you paid with a credit card while shopping offline or online, then your card will be credited at the time of refund.
  • If you paid with cash, check or debit card, but do not have a debit card at the time of return, and your refund amount is exceeding $500 pretax, then the amount will be refunded to you with a corporate check. 

*If you wish to return any product without the promotional item(s) that it originally included, the value of the promotional item will be deducted from the refund amount. If your purchased item included a gift card, then at the time of return, the value of the gift card will be deducted from the refunded amount as gift cards are non-returnable.

Returns without a receipt

Customers are allowed to return the products to the same store at which they purchased them without a receipt but only if they are carrying a credit card or debit card that they used for the transaction. 

For customers buying online – if you lost your receipt, you can log in to your account and reprint the receipt from the My Orders section.

In any case, if you can no longer access your receipt and do not have a credit card or debit card to locate the transaction then, you can visit the nearest Staples store within 30 days of making the purchase and your return will be eligible for the lowest selling price. You will also need to carry some identification while making a transaction without a receipt.

Refund Policy

For purchases made online or via phone using the online mode of transactions, the refund will be processed for the returned items in the following order: Staples Credit Card, Major Credit Cards, Prepaid Credit Card, Check, and Staples Gift Card.

For purchases made in-store via cash, credit card, or debit card, the refund can be credited to your account if you are carrying it at the time of return otherwise you can also be refunded with cash below $500. For amounts exceeding $500 pre-tax, a corporate check will be issued to be the customer. 

Based on the mode of payment or refund, your amount will be transferred within the following timeframes:

For major and prepaid credit cards- 3 to 5 days

  • Gift Cards- 72 business hours via email and 7 to10 business days via postal mail
  • Staples Credit Accounts- within 3 to 5 business days
  • Refund Coupon- 72 business hours via email and 7 to10 business days via postal mail
  • Check- 7 to 10 business days via postal mail

Exchange Policy

If you received the wrong product item while purchasing online, then you can simply return the product for a refund and then place a new order.

If your product arrived damaged or defective, then you can return the item using “damaged or defective” as your return reason. You will be asked to initiate an exchange, then you can have the defective product replaced with a perfect one at no cost.
